COURSE FAQS

Where will the event take place?

The Pho3nix Sub7 and Sub8 Project, powered by Zwift will be held during a two-day window from 5th to 6th June 2022 at the Dekra Lausitzring, one of the most famous race tracks in Germany.

When will the event take place?

The Pho3nix Sub7 & Sub8 Project, Powered by Zwift is scheduled for June 5 and June 6, 2022. Sunday June 5 is the primary race day, however, June 6 is the back-up day in the instance of poor weather that would prevent the success of the attempt. A decision on race day will be made by event organisers on Thursday June 2, 2022, subject to weather forecasting. All ticketed spectators will be notified the official event via email on Thursday June 2.

What is the swim course?

The 3.8km swim leg will be held at Lake Senftenberg, 19km from the Dekra venue. A point to point swim designed to eliminate delays and deliver the fastest possible times. The men and women will begin at different times, delivering two separate head-to-head races.

What is the bike course?

Bike Course Section 1: 19.km from Lake Senftenberg to Dekra Lausitzring. This is closed public roads and there is NO SPECTATOR ACCESS on this section of the course. Spectators are to go to Dekra Lausitzring to await the arrival of the cyclists as they enter the main event venue.
Bike Course (Main): 27 laps of the 5.8km Dekra Lausitzring Test Oval.

What is the run course?

Run Course – 12 laps of the 3.5km Looped Run Course.

Is the course officially measured by an authorised entity?
Yes. The Pho3nix Sub7 & Sub8 Project, Powered by Zwift courses are certified by the Deutsche Triathlon Union to ensure the legitimacy of the attempts.

What time does the venue open?

The venue will open from 7.30am on Sunday June 5 2022.

What time will the athletes arrive at Dekra Lausitzring?

Athletes are expected to arrive from 8am onwards, subject to the official start time.

Where is the Dekra Lausitzring?
Venue Entry is located at Lausitzallee 1, 01998 Schipkau, Germany.
Enter off the L55 between Friedhostraße and Senftenberger Straße.

Upon entry way finding signage will direct spectators to the spectator parking area.

Where do I park?
Parking is located at Dekra Lausitzring Test Oval.
Is there wheelchair access?
There is no specific wheelchair access, however there are no stairs at any point on the venue.
Are there any wet weather viewing options?
There are no wet weather viewing options. Attendees are encouraged to bring a poncho or umbrella in the event of wet weather.
Will there be food and beverages available to purchase?
There will be limited food and beverage options available to purchase on site. Attendees are able to bring their own.

This isn’t a real Ironman!

The Pho3nix Sub7, powered by Zwift and Pho3nix Sub8, powered by Zwift attempts are private events, and are not associated with Ironman or any other organiser. The Pho3nix Sub7 and Pho3nix Sub8 attempts aim to create a new world standard of human performance through the engagement of four of the greatest triathletes on earth in an attempt to achieve what is believed impossible; to break seven hours for a man, and eight hours for a woman, over the Sub7 | Sub8 distance of triathlon.

As well as pushing the limits of human performance, the Sub7 and Sub8 attempts aim to promote the work of the Pho3nix Foundation, a not-for-profit organisation focused on promoting physical activity among children.

What is the current fastest female iron-distance time?

Why are you allowing pacemakers?

To break the 7 hour and 8 hour mark, our competitors will be assisted by some of the best single discipline athletes in the world. This will allow them to measure their effort, conserve energy and control their pace in order to achieve the fastest possible time. In no way will our pacing athletes physically assist our competitors at any time during the attempt.

Is the event conducted in accordance with World Triathlon rules?

The Sub7 | Sub8 race rules have been adopted from IRONMAN, World Triathlon and Union Cycliste Internationale.

How many pacemakers are allowed per discipline?

Each Competitor may recruit up to a total of ten (10) Athlete Pacemakers (swimmers, cyclists and runners) to help them pace, draft, provide sustenance, information and encouragement in their quest to break Sub7 or Sub8.

Is there an anti-doping policy?

All athletes involved will be subject to WADA anti-doping compliance under the Sub7 | Sub8 rules.

How is the event timed?

We will be partnering with a Timing and Technical company to deliver all aspects required to the highest standard, ensuring the legitimacy of the attempts.

How were the athletes selected?

Each athlete was selected for their ability to achieve the outcome, although all four will employ very different tactics in their pursuit of a Sub7 or Sub8 time.

What are the rules?

Are there any time penalties awarded during the race?

This is a draft legal event, and as such no penalties for drafting apply. For other situations in which penalties may be applied, please refer to the rules here.

Can an athlete be disqualified?

Athletes will incur a time penalty for any infractions.

Can an athlete protest a result?

Yes. There will be an appeals process.

What kind of wetsuit can the athletes wear?

Athletes will be able to develop new wetsuits designed to give them maximum support during the swim leg.

Are there any minimum water temperatures for a wetsuit swim?

No. Athletes are free to wear wetsuits regardless of the water temperature.

Are there any restrictions on what bike, and components, an athlete can use?

Any equipment used by the athletes will comply with World Triathlon and Union Cycliste International rules.

Is drafting legal on the bike leg?

Each athlete will be allowed ten (10) support athletes (pacemakers) to assist them in their attempt. These support athletes can be used in any combination for any discipline during the attempt, and do not need to complete any set distance. Support athletes can be used multiple times within a single discipline, and for more than one discipline. Athletes can utilise draft from their support athletes with no restriction, but cannot physically assist them at any time.

What technical officials are on course for the event?

Experienced triathlon technical officials will be engaged to enforce the rules and athlete safety.

Do they all start at the same time?

Start times will be determined once the venue and course is designed and approved.

What is the purpose of Pho3nix Sub7, powered by Zwift and Pho3nix Sub8, powered by Zwift?

The Sub7 and Sub8 attempts aim to create a new world standard of human performance through the engagement of four of the greatest triathletes on earth to achieve what is believed impossible; to break seven hours for a man, and eight hours for a woman, over the full distance of triathlon [2.4 mile swim | 112 mile bike | 26.2 mile run].

As well as pushing the limits of human performance, the Sub7 and Sub8 attempts aim to promote the work of the Pho3nix Foundation, a not-for-profit organisation focused on promoting physical activity among children.

What is Pho3nix?

The Pho3nix Foundation is a not for profit organisation focused on creating a worldwide inter-generational legacy where the inclusion of sport in a young person’s life is seen as being integral to their development as a human being.

Can I attend Pho3nix Sub7, powered by Zwift and Pho3nix Sub8, powered by Zwift as a spectator?

Yes! You will be able to attend the event and we will be offering exclusive travel packages via our website. These will be in accordance with any restrictions at the time regarding COVID-19.

Is there any prize money?

Yes. Athletes will be given a participation fee, and a bonus for breaking 7 or 8 hours.

Is this endorsed by World Triathlon, Challenge or Ironman?

The Pho3nix Sub7, powered by Zwift and Pho3nix Sub8, powered by Zwift Project is a private event of Pho3nix Foundation and Mana Sports and Entertainment Group.

Can I volunteer?

Yes. We will advise details of the positions required closer to the event.

Where can I watch it?

The Pho3nix Sub7, powered by Zwift and Pho3nix Sub8, powered by Zwift attempts will be broadcast live and documented in a theatrical documentary following the attempts. Full details of where and when to watch will be made available closer to the event.

Can I buy a Pho3nix Sub7, powered by Zwift and Pho3nix Sub8, powered by Zwift Kit?

Yes. Official Pho3nix Sub7, powered by Zwift and Pho3nix Sub8, powered by Zwift merchandise will be available for purchase later in 2021.
