The Pho3nix Foundation and MANA Studios today have released the second episode of Pho3nix Presents: Road to Sub7 and Sub8, the mini-documentary series following the four elite athletes set to undertake the Pho3nix Sub7 and Sub8 Project, powered by Zwift.
“Nicola” puts a spotlight on dual Olympic medalist Nicola Spirig and her preparations to go Sub8: to become the first female to finish a full distance triathlon in under 8 hours. It gives insight into how the world’s most successful female Olympic triathlete with a storied career spanning five Olympic cycles will approach the attempt – especially when a bike crash throws a wrench into her training plans.
In footage taken between December 2021 and February 2022 and interviews with Spirig and her coach Brett Sutton, the episode shows the work Spirig has begun to put into her training and equipment choices on swim, bike, and run. It also reveals two of her powerhouse pacemakers: two-time marathon swimming world champion and International Marathon Swimming Hall of Famer Angela Maurer, and Swiss marathon national record holder Maja Neuenschwander.
The Pho3nix Sub7 and Sub8 Project, powered by Zwift is set for the 5th or 6th of June 2022 at the Dekra Lausitzring motor racing complex in Germany with Olympic champions Alistair Brownlee and Kristian Blummenfelt racing to be the first man in history to break seven hours for the full distance triathlon, while Spirig faces off against 70.3 world champion Lucy Charles-Barclay.
Pho3nix Presents: Road to Sub7 and Sub8 explores key moments of these athletes’ physical and mental preparation towards this audacious and unprecedented opportunity to make history and establish their place at the peak of the endurance world.
